Category 2: Emergency Skills for Newborn Care.

At least one course must include a hands-on component. A minimum of 15 contact hours must be from the topics below.


Any health provider course accredited for CEUs/CMEs/CNEs in these topics:

  • Recognizing and responding to Newborn emergencies
  • Recognizing and responding to Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn
  • Recognizing and responding to preterm or low birth weight babies
  • Recognizing and responding to newborn infections and metabolic disorders
  • Emergency skills for the delivery and immediate care of twins
  • Emergency skills for the delivery and immediate care of breeches

Neonatal Resuscitation of the Newborn

  • Neonatal Resuscitation of the Newborn (provider course) sponsored by AAP (on-line course completion equal to 5 CEUs for modules 1-4 and 9; or 9 CEUs for all 9 courses, plus an additional 4 CEU s for the hands-on portion of the course. An NRP card submitted towards category two will count as 9 CEUs, or 14 CEUs if evidence is submitted of passing all 9 on-line modules. The hands-on portion is required in order to obtain the NRP card issued by the AAP.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation and Transitions (course by Karen Strange) which includes the NRP online course and hands-on workshop leading to the NRP certification, and additional material specific to out-of-hospital providers  Four hours for NRP plus 5 additional CEUs (must be a hands-on course)

  • Newborn Assessment (NetCE Course 32261, 10 credits)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) 8 hrs
